The importance of the original text in the history of devotional literature need not be stressed. The present edition includes information on the Manuel, its background, content and influence, and a study of the language of the Middle English manuscript and the translator’s techniques, based on a comparison with the two Anglo-Norman manuscripts closest to the Middle English version, BL MS Harley 4971 and MS Arundel 288. The edition includes full textual and explanatory notes, a glossary and indexes of names and exempla.
